I am a long distance cyclist, often on the road alone for as long as 12 hours at a time over a two week period. On my last long trip, I attached a small portable radio to the handlebars for entertainment. It was fine when not in traffic or, worse yet, in the mountains where radio signals were few and far between.

After stumbling across the Hipe Multi-Function Bicycle speaker case on Amazon, I ordered one, expecting it would give me limited function due to its short battery life. At $15, however, I decided it was worth the risk.

I tested the speaker system using an inexpensive, battery powered, Coby MP3 player purchased on Amazon.com. I turned the volume level of the MP3 player to maxium. The following are my obversations

The sound quality appears to be excellent, considering the two three inch speakers.

The volume level seems adequate to overcome all but the loudest traffic noises (ie: diesel trucks, buses, etc.)

The external volume controls work perfectly and are perfectly positioned. Being back-lit will make using the speakers in low light conditions very easy.

Battery life was a whopping 30 hours using a relatively loud output setting. I'm astounded at the manufacturer's estimate of 4 to 5 hours of battery life on a charge. I can only assume that using a flash drive without any volume output, vastly limits the battery life. I have not tried using it with a flash drive. My MP3 player suits me well.

For under $5, I was able to purchase a spare Nokia BL-5C spare battery on Amazon.com, giving me approximately five days of listening pleasure without access to a recharge. On a very long trip without access to power, purchasing an additional battery or two would not be out of the question.

For another $6, I was able to purchase a USB to wall charger adapter, thus eliminating the need for computer access to charge the battery.

Recharge time on either the computer or adapter was approximately three and a half hours, from totally depleted to full charge.

I've decided to purchase another Hipe speaker system soon, just in case the manfacturer wakes up to the fact that it is vastly underpriced. It never hurts to have spares on hand.

Though it is winter here, I feel I was able to give it a fair test using indoor conditions, and am looking forward to many hours of my favorite music on long bike rides this coming season.
